Eisenach is the sixth largest city in Thuringia and lies in the west of the state. It is one of the so-called Luther cities. The medium-sized town has been a county-free town since 1998 and is the centre of West Thuringia as well as the bordering north-eastern areas of Hesse. In terms of regional planning, the city occupies the position of a central centre with partial functions of an upper centre and is assigned to the planning region of southwest Thuringia. Eisenach lies on the Hörsel on the northern edge of the Thuringian Forest.
